LESSON 2 - FIRST COMMUNION LEARNING CENTER - THE WORD, PRAYER AND CELEBRATION

LITURGY OF THE WORD

At Mass, in our parish church, we meet with friends, and other families.
We talk to God together.
We tell God that we love Him.
We ask for the things that we need.
We ask Him to help other people.
We say, "Thank you," to our Father.

Whenever we talk to God, we grow closer to Him.  We become better too!

Sometimes, we do not understand what the priest is saying.  Still, we like to be at Mass with our family and friends.  We like to join in when they sing and pray together.  Together we say,
"Lord, have Mercy"
"Lord, hear our prayer"
"Thanks be to God"
"Amen"
Sometime we sing "Alleluia"  Alleluia is a prayer of joy.  It means, "Praise to God."

We sing and pray as part of God's Family at Mass.  Talk with your child about what you experience at Mass.

WE PRAY AT HOME AND AT MASS

At home we talk to our parents. We ask them questions and show them that we love them.  We tell them when we are happy and when we are sad.  We grow up more and more because we talk to our parents and learn much from them.  Sometimes we talk to God at home with our parents or by ourselves.  We tell God that we love Him.

At Mass, in our parish church, we meet with other friends and their families.  We talk to God together. We tell God that we love Him.  We ask for the things that we need.  We ask Him to help other people.  We say thank you.

God's family prays together at Mass to PRAISE God, to show CONTRITION (feeling sorry) for the wrongs we do, to THANK God for His goodness and to ASK (petition) for what we need.  The Mass is the greatest of all prayers.  We also can say spontaneous prayers and memorized prayers. These can be done either as a group, family, or by ourselves.

Together finish the sentences below to offer your prayers to God.

CONTRITION - This prayer is asking for forgiveness.  Think of someone you hurt and say I'm sorry.
God, I am sorry that I ____________________________

PETITION - This prayer is asking to help someone else or yourself.  Think of someone in need, sick or lonely.
Dear God please _____________________________

PRAISE - This prayer is about praising God and telling him how great He is!
God, you are ___________________________

THANKSGIVING - This prayer is about giving thanks to all God has given you and your family.
Thank you God for __________________________
